As the school year progresses, I always struggle with finding quick, homemade, recipes that satisfy. (Yes, these aren’t the healthiest, but they are a TREAT at our house.) 🙂 These Quick Homemade Cherry Turnovers not only come together in a snap, but my family loves them! I hope yours will, too.
This recipe is a modification of some turnovers from my aunt. I never asked my Aunt Linda for her recipe, but as you might know from reading other blog posts, I like the challenge of creating things myself. 🙂
Homemade Cherry Turnovers Recipe…
These turnovers start with purchased phyllo dough. In my book, there is NOTHING wrong with buying this. Very, very, very few people actually make this stuff. It is important in this recipe for giving the turnovers their flaky layers.
Since I was in a hurry, I also used canned pie filling. You can use any flavor you want. I simply used cherry because that is a favorite at our house. I think lemon, raspberry, or apple would be very good, too.
The other ingredients are pantry staples: butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. I also like to use almond extract when I work with cherries, but that’s up to you.
On your cutting board, lay out three pieces of phyllo dough. It’s pretty fragile, so be careful. Next, brush on a layer of melted butter. Cut the dough in half longways, and then put a small amount of pie filling about an inch from one corner. (Maybe 2 Tablespoons or so.)
Begin by taking one corner over the filling and forming a small triangle. Gently press on the created seam. Fold over the filling again, creating another triangle and continue to work your way down the dough, brushing with butter as necessary to act as “glue.” Once you have created a little triangle of goodness, give the turnover a final brush of melted butter and set on your covered baking sheet.
See, I told you it was easy!!! This is why Quick Homemade Cherry Turnovers are one of my favorite go-to recipes to share.
Quick Homemade Cherry Turnovers
Notes
Feel free to experiment with filling flavors. These can be customized to any taste.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. package of purchased phyllo dough (only 1/2 will be used)
- 1 21 oz. can cherry pie filling (any flavor can be used)
- 1 1/2 sticks butter (12 Tablespoons), divided
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 ℉. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper and set aside. Melt one stick of butter (8 T.).
- On a cutting board, place three sheets of thawed phyllo dough.
- Brush with melted butter. Cut the sheet in half longways, creating two long rectangles.
- Place a small amount of pie filling (2 T. or so) about one inch in from a corner. Fold the dough over the filling, creating a small triangle. Press down gently to seal the seam.
- Continue to fold the dough over in small triangles, brushing with butter to act as “glue,” until all the dough is folded into a small triangle packet. Brush top of dough with melted butter.
- Repeat with remaining dough.
- Bake in a preheated oven for 15-17 minutes, or until the turnovers are golden brown. Remove from oven and cool slightly.
- To make icing: Melt remaining 4 Tablespoons of butter. Whisk in extracts. Add powdered sugar by 1/4 cup amounts until icing reaches drizzling consistency. Drizzle over turnovers.
- Serve.
- Store any leftovers in a tightly covered container and use within three days. (I doubt they last that long!)
