Do you crave homemade goodness for your family but don’t have hours to spend in the kitchen? Homemade Oatmeal Honey Wheat Bread is one of those nutritious recipes that your family with LOVE and you’ll feel good about the lack of preservatives. If you don’t have a bread machine, you can mix this as a normal bread recipe: mix, let it rise, shape, rise, and bake. However, my choice is to use my favorite bread machine!
Homemade Oatmeal Honey Wheat Bread Recipe…
This recipe is a modification of Honey-Wheat Oatmeal Bread from Taste of Home’s Healthy Cooking 2009 Annual Recipes cookbook. This is a wonderful resource, as are all Taste of Home’s cookbooks! This particular recipe I’ve made for years, and I LOVE that the sweetener is honey! I also like that the recipe uses mostly whole grains…old fashioned oats and whole wheat flour. Not having to purchase vital wheat gluten for this recipe is also nice. However, if you are going to make a lot of whole wheat bread recipes in your bread machine, I’d recommend purchasing a bag of vital wheat gluten. It keeps forever in the freezer and really helps whole wheat bread recipes to rise well and be less dense.
For adding the ingredients into my bread machine, I follow my manufacturer’s recommendations. That means my Zojirushi likes ingredients in this order: liquids, flour, add-ins, butter, yeast. Your machine might want a different order, so please use those instructions.
My modifications and suggestions
I prefer to use butter in this recipe. The original called for 2 Tablespoons of canola oil. I think the butter adds more richness and is more natural. However, you use what makes you happy! 🙂
Please note I also purchase bulk yeast. See below for what I purchase. After opening, I stick it in a tightly sealed Tupperware container and store in my freezer. Again, like the vital wheat gluten, the yeast will keep for a long, long, long time!!! (One packet of yeast is 2 1/4 teaspoons. I am lazy and usually just add 1 Tablespoon when a packet is called for in a recipe.)
Homemade Oatmeal Honey Wheat Bread can be served as a sandwich, toasted, in French toast, or made into bread cubes and crumbs. It is versatile and freezes well. At our house, we usually don’t eat an entire loaf prior to it molding (about a week), so I cut it in half and freeze half. I wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place it in a gallon ziptop bag. It works great, and it saves me time. This way I only have to bake bread about twice a month. 🙂

Notes
This recipe works very well if using the timer on the bread machine. Add the ingredients and then select when you want it done.
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cups water
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 cups bread flour
- 1 cup old fashioned oats
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2 Tablespoons cold butter, cut into cubes
- 1 Tablespoon active dry yeast (or one packet)
Instructions
- In bread machine pan, add ingredients in the above order. (Unless your manufacturer requires a different order.)
- Select the basic bread setting on your bread machine, set the timer if desired, and choose crust color. (The recipe states this makes a 2 lb. loaf, or about 20 slices.)
- Remove from pan and cool completely prior to wrapping or placing in a bread keeper.
