Do you use your pickup for hauling luggage, work gear, or fun garage sale finds? Not so long ago, my husband purchased a new pickup truck. Now, this was a very BIG deal at our house, as his previous model is a 1989!!! Please let me be clear…pickups at our house are WORK vehicles. They are meant to be used to carry items… the bed will get used and it will get scratched. Since we use our pickup to haul various items, I decided to sew a bed liner to keep items from sliding around. I think you’ll be surprised at just how easy and effective this inexpensive liner is at helping things stay-put. ๐ Below are my tips for creating your very own EASY DIY Pickup Truck Bed Liner.
Steps to Creating Your Custom DIY Pickup Truck Bed Liner…
- To make the bed liner, I purchased two packages of “Supreme” shelf liner from our local home improvement store. This is the exact liner I used.2. After unrolling the two rolls, I lined up the raw edges and ran it through my serger, being careful not to take off too much of the material. My goal was to sew the two pieces together without much waste. Please note: You’ll need to help the material through the machine because it is nice and grippy and likes to stick to the throat plate on the machine!ย
3. Lay the liner, seam side down, in the bed of a clean pick up truck. (Sorry, ours is pretty dirty in the picture below!) I could have used three rolls to completely cover the bed and then cut out around the wheel wells; however, my husband decided he preferred the size of two for our purposes.
Final thoughts…
We did test this liner on vacation to Florida. In our 2,500+ mile trip, the liner kept all our suitcases, cooler, and other items from rolling around in the truck bed. For a less than $30 investment, I created a DIY Pickup Truck Bed Liner that not only works to keep items secure in the bed, but it will last my husband for several years.
To clean the liner, simply hang it up outside (over a clothesline or fence) and spray it off with a garden hose. Let dry and return to the pickup bed. As a side note, we do have a bed cover on the pickup. I’m not sure if the bed liner would stay in place without weight if we didn’t have it covered. This is something you might want to consider.
By using the shelf liner, you can fully customize the liner to your particular pickup. Simply cut around the wheel wells, any gooseneck ball, or 5th wheel hitches. ๐ Easy!
