Are you better than I am at asking your family what they really want to eat for get-togethers? I mean, usually I decide based on what I have in the pantry, the time I have available, and if it’s really something I want to make. Thankfully, Chocolate Chip Oreo Cheese Ball is something we can all agree on!
This recipe was a request from our youngest for his birthday party with his friends, and honestly, how could I say no? The recipe takes almost no time, the dippers are super-easy, and it tastes AMAZING! It is middle school student approved, and in my book, that’s a great endorsement! 🙂
Chocolate Chip Oreo Cheese Ball Recipe…
The list of ingredients for this recipe is pretty short, and if you’re like me, you likely have most of them already. I know not everything is homemade for this recipe…but Oreos? These are the one cookie I buy (beyond Girl Scout Thin Mints that are awesome frozen…but I digress…). If you haven’t tried my easy Oreo Ice Cream, you simply must!
This dip will be quite soft when mixed together. That’s OK! Creamy and dippable is what makes this cheese ball so delightful…no need to let it soften before serving. Just dig right in!
I wrap the cheese ball together tightly and refrigerate for at least an hour, though you can make this the day before your party. Chocolate Chip Oreo Cheese Ball is not a super-firm cheese ball. If you want the ball to be more firm, mix the crushed Oreos and extra chocolate chips into the ball instead of reserving it to roll on the outside.
I like to use a pie plate to mix together the Oreo crumbs and extra mini chocolate chips. It also helps with rolling the chilled cheese ball. This is the messy part…but so worth it!
Due to the softness of this dessert, I serve Chocolate Chip Oreo Cheese Ball in a bowl and place the assorted dippers around it. Our favorites are pretzels, teddy grahams, and vanilla wafers. However, graham cracker sticks and other assorted cookies would be good, too.
Chocolate Chip Oreo Cheese Ball
Notes
I always use Neufchatel cheese in place of cream cheese. It is a little softer but has less fat. I also always use butter…not margarine. A mini food processor was used to crush the Oreos, but a rolling pin and plastic bag could be used as well. This recipe makes a very soft, dippable, cheese ball. It will not form a true “ball” like other recipes.
Ingredients
- 1 (8 oz) pkg. cream cheese, softened
- 1 stick of butter, softened
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 (12 oz.) pkg. mini chocolate chips, divided
- 1 1/4 cups crushed Oreo cookies (approx. 12 cookies)
- Miscellaneous dippers like graham cracker sticks, pretzels, teddy grahams, vanilla wafers, etc.
Instructions
- Mix the cream cheese, butter, and vanilla extract together with a hand mixer.
- Add the powdered sugar, brown sugar, and 1 cup miniature chocolate chips; mix thoroughly.
- Wrap well and refrigerate until firm enough to roll into a ball. It will still be relatively soft.
- Mix together crushed Oreo cookies and the remaining 1 cup of miniature chocolate chips.
- Roll the ball in the crushed cookie mixture. (It will be soft.) Place in a serving bowl.
- Serve with dippers of your choice.
This recipe came from my Illinois FCCLA cookbook, From the Tried and True to the Very New. It has a lot of great recipes from fellow FCS teachers and students. I will share more in the future!
