On vacation in Naples, Florida, we experienced something we hadn’t tried before…breadstick nuggets with a marinara sauce. They were AMAZING! However, I don’t know about you, but driving 1,000+ miles for some great food isn’t a possibility. 🙂 So, I worked on a recipe to bring you these fun little nuggets to try with your family! They make a great appetizer but also a fun main dish. I hope you’ll try these Breadstick Nuggets with Pizza Dipping Sauce with your family. They are sooooo good!
Breadstick Nuggets with Pizza Dipping Sauce Recipe…
The original idea for these nuggets came from Rosati’s in Naples, Florida. I probably am behind the times, but I’d never considered frying pizza dough before. Why not??? Maybe it’s because I don’t fry a lot of things or because if I do, the canola oil starts to smell like fish…not a great smell to have lingering for days in our house! Our lovely waitress shared the oil they used to fry the dough, and I think that’s the secret…soybean oil. Immediately, I had to get my hands on some.
So my search began for soybean oil. You’d think it’d be easy to find since we live in the Soybean Capital of the World! (Yes, that’s a thing!) However, nothing was labeled “soybean oil.” Instead, I had to look at the list of ingredients on the vegetable oils. That led to success! So, be sure to watch the ingredient labels when purchasing your soybean oil. 🙂 Interestingly enough, the frying oil did not smell like fish after heating. From this little experiment, I might move from using canola oil to soybean oil in all my recipes!
The sauce for the breadstick nuggets was easy…my favorite pizza sauce I developed several years ago. We love the blend of Italian flavors and that the sauce is a little thicker. It works well on pizza, but it made the perfect dipping sauce for the breadstick nuggets, too! I combined our favorite sauce with our favorite pizza dough recipe, and BAM! Breadstick Nuggets with Pizza Dipping Sauce became a recipe we’ll use again and again! 🙂
The above picture shows how I cut out the pizza dough on the diagonal. I think this makes the nuggets easier to dip and eat. Using a pizza cutter really helped make fast work of the cutting!
I hope you’ll give the Breadstick Nuggets with Pizza Dipping Sauce a try at your next family pizza night or event! I think they will be a great appetizer, and I plan to make them ahead of parties and keep them warm in a 200° F oven until serving time. That way, I can have the hot oil all cleaned up before company comes!
